SMYC LADIES DAY BOAT RACE, 13 October 2018
Ladies Day Great Pumpkin Kayak Race Oct.13, 2018
On a cloudy cool day SMYC held our ladies' day race. The event proved to be fun for participants and spectators alike. The racers consisted of 4 contestants Susan Rodriguez, Sherry Lamont, Glenda Gardner and Kat Wacker (adorable bear).
At the sound of the horn the racers were off and four sets paddles were catching water heading to the buoy across the basin. After the second kayak rounded the buoy the Great Pumpkin was launched into the water and the boats set on a course straight and swift toward the floating orange fruit bobbing 20 feet from the dock.
The boats circled the helpless pumpkin and the battle for the orange orb was about to ensue. Standing on the the dock the spectators viewed a ring side fight as these lasses and bear attempted to bring the prize on board their vessel. Once the orb was secures on board Glenda's vessel the paddles from other boats now were now being used as bats, clubs and pool cues to dislodge the orb.
The boats followed behind Glenda as she sped toward the finish line the other boats in pursuit caught her as she was only then feet from the finish line and circled her and blocked the vessel from crossing the finish line.
A short skirmish ended as Glenda clawed the kayak threw the blockade and the crowd cheered the victor. With twinkling eyes and a smiles placed on the faces of our group we were glad to have a event that produced some mirth mixed with fierce on the water hijinks. Maybe next year we invite male members to take part in similar event, that might be a tough to ponder. Thanks,
